Position Summary

We are seeking experienced IBM i System/36 Developers to support the modernization of legacy IBM System/36 applications. The successful candidates will be responsible for analyzing existing applications, converting legacy System/36 components to modern IBM i technologies, performing remediation activities, and validating functionality through comprehensive testing.

This role requires deep technical expertise in System/36 environments, OCL, and RPG II, along with proven experience converting legacy applications to CL and RPG IV (ILE RPG).

Key Responsibilities

• Analyze existing System/36 applications, job streams, menus, and screen flows.

• Convert Operational Control Language (OCL) programs and processes to IBM i Control Language (CL).

• Convert RPG II applications to RPG IV / ILE RPG while preserving business functionality and application integrity.

• Review and remediate converted code to improve maintainability, performance, and compliance with modernization standards.

• Perform unit testing, integration testing, and support user acceptance testing activities.

• Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve issues identified during remediation and testing.

• Modernize System/36 screens and menu structures.

• Document application functionality, conversion approaches, remediation activities, and testing results.

• Collaborate with technical teams, business stakeholders, and quality assurance resources throughout the modernization effort.

• Participate in code reviews and contribute to technical best practices and knowledge transfer activities.

Required Skills and Experience

Technical Skills

• Strong experience working in IBM System/36 environments.

• Extensive experience with Operational Control Language (OCL).

• Strong RPG II development and maintenance experience.

• Hands-on experience converting OCL to CL.

• Hands-on experience converting RPG II applications to RPG IV / ILE RPG.

• Experience with IBM i application modernization initiatives.

• Strong understanding of batch processing, job scheduling, and legacy application architectures.

• Experience performing conversion remediation and code optimization activities.

• Experience planning and executing conversion-related testing.

• Experience with screen and menu conversion and modernization.

Professional Skills

• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

• Ability to understand and translate complex legacy business logic into modern IBM i solutions.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Strong documentation and organizational skills.

• Ability to work independently and within a collaborative project team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience using automated code conversion tools and performing post-conversion remediation.

• Experience modernizing large-scale IBM i applications in distribution, wholesale, manufacturing, or ERP environments.

• Familiarity with IBM i development tools, source control, and change management processes.

• Experience participating in legacy application transformation and modernization programs.

Deliverables

Successful candidates will be expected to:

• Complete OCL to CL conversion activities.

• Complete RPG II to RPG IV / ILE RPG conversion activities.

• Remediate and validate converted applications.

• Execute and document testing activities.

• Support screen and menu modernization efforts.

• Produce technical documentation and knowledge transfer materials.

• Contribute to the successful delivery of modernization objectives.

Experience Requirements

• 7+ years of IBM midrange development experience.

• 5+ years of System/36 development and support experience.

• Demonstrated experience with application conversion and modernization initiatives.

• Proven track record delivering RPG and OCL conversion projects in IBM i environments.

Additional Notes

This position is focused on System/36 application modernization, including OCL, RPG II, CL, RPG IV, remediation, testing, and user interface conversion activities. Experience related to specialized source-format transformation, database modernization, or other advanced modernization disciplines is not required for this role.
