Safety Manager
Job Description:
This is a full-time, onsite position based in Berwick, Pennsylvania. Candidates must live in the area, be willing to relocate, or be able to commute to the project site five days per week.
The HITT Safety Manager is responsible for the safety performance and safety development of their assigned business units and direct reports. This individual serves as a safety resource at the project, business unit, and corporate levels, regularly assessing safety needs and utilizing assigned resources to meet those needs. This individual also participates in developing HITT’s corporate safety program and safety culture.
- Responsibilities
- Manage direct report workloads based on project volume, project needs, and additional department responsibilities, and make staffing recommendations accordingly
- Conduct regular check-ins and yearly performance evaluations for all direct reports
- Assess training and learning needs for direct reports
- Train and support Safety Department members as needed
- Review career goals with team members and provide feedback on career development
- Participate in the retention and recruiting of HITT Safety Department team members
- Manage outside consultant project needs and performance
- Determine and fulfill the safety needs of multiple projects and/or business units
- Evaluate the inspection performance of department members and project team members
- Conduct onsite safety inspections independently using the Predictive Solutions System
- Evaluate hazard and incident data to identify trends and focus on specific project and corporate safety needs
- Set safety inspection criteria and expectations and evaluate performance
- Mentor Operations/Site Operations in the safety inspection process
- Evaluate project compliance with federal, state, local, corporate, and client safety regulations and procedures
- Identify and address safety needs and challenges associated with future project work
- Evaluate and address the safety performance of subcontractors working on HITT projects
- Review project safety inspections with Site Operations
- Regularly analyze inspection and incident data to identify business unit safety trends and recommend corrective actions
- Distribute project safety inspections to key project team members and subcontractors
- Distribute open issue summaries and evaluations for projects and business units
- Research and evaluate current and future OSHA regulations to address project needs
- Independently lead OSHA or third-party safety inspections
- Independently lead crisis or accident/incident response and investigations
- Develop, select, and deliver safety toolbox meetings and project safety orientations
- Evaluate and coach others on toolbox meeting and orientation delivery
- Enforce safety requirements with HITT and subcontractor personnel
- Evaluate project safety policies for effectiveness and identify improvement opportunities
- Deliver “Just In Time” onsite safety training
- Independently review and develop Job Hazard Analyses for common and complex tasks
- Assist with safety planning during preconstruction
- Lead select subcontractor safety preconstruction meetings
- Identify and address special needs for Site-Specific Safety Plans
- Participate in project safety and subcontractor meetings as needed
- Develop project safety orientations that address special client or site requirements
- Elevate safety concerns appropriately
- Audit project safety signage and provide recommendations
- Audit and review project documentation requirements and implement improvements as needed
- Independently research and resolve safety-related issues
- Independently identify or select specialized safety and protective equipment for projects
- Collaborate with project teams to execute project-wide safety stand-downs
- Identify and arrange specific safety training to meet project or business unit needs
- Serve as a technical resource to Safety Department members and Site Operations
- Evaluate inspection processes and identify improvement opportunities
- Develop and/or lead the execution of department and corporate-level goals
- Develop business unit safety goals
- Develop and conduct in-house safety training
- Identify corporate safety and protective equipment needs
- Research and trial new safety-related products
- Prepare monthly safety summaries for assigned business units
- Act as the primary point of contact for processes such as Predictive Solutions or Toolbox Talks within the Safety Department
- Participate in HITT corporate initiatives and/or committees outside of safety
- Create and maintain positive working relationships with HITT project teams and subcontractors
- Respond to safety concerns from clients, tenants, or impacted members of the public
- Collaborate with other members of the corporate Risk Management Team as needed
- Participate in safety and/or construction professional organization meetings
- Qualifications
- Ability to work onsite in Berwick, PA, five days per week is required. Candidates must live locally, relocate to the area, or maintain a reliable commute that supports this schedule
- Bachelor’s degree in safety or a related field preferred
- CHST, CSP, or equivalent professional safety designation
- First Aid/CPR certification
- OSHA 30-Hour certification for construction; OSHA 500 preferred
- Degree and five years of experience, or eight or more years of construction safety experience; other professional experience or skills may serve as a substitute
- Comprehensive understanding of high-hazard technical areas, including cranes, fall protection, scaffolding, excavation, and electrical work
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to assess and prioritize multiple business unit needs, tasks, projects, and demands
- Ability to handle confidential information
- Ability to adapt to flexible and changing schedules
- Strong analytical and research skills to define and solve problems
- Ability to work independently
- Willingness to respond to emergency or crisis conditions
- Ability to work under various environmental and site conditions
- Ability to navigate stairs, ladders, and uneven floors or ground conditions
In accordance with Virginia Senate Bill 215 (SB 215), the base salary range for this position is:
$95,000.00 - $140,000.00
Compensation in other cities and states may vary. HITT Contracting offers a competitive total benefits and compensation package including performance-based bonuses, premium health care coverage including vision and dental, employer-matched 401(k), wellness reimbursement program, paid holidays and time-off, and other voluntary benefits and leave types. The determination of salary is based on the candidate’s individual professional experience, qualifications, education, skills, and training.
