- Position Summary
- Norfolk State University seeks qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Coach / Director of Player Development for Women's Basketball. Norfolk State University, located in Norfolk, Virginia, is a Division I HBCU with a 17-sport athletics program competing in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
- This is an entry-level position for a coach at the start of a Division I career. The Assistant Coach / Director of Player Development is a countable coach who serves, under the direction of the Head Coach, in a dual capacity: as a member of the on-court coaching staff and as the staff member responsible for the holistic development of student-athletes on and off the floor. The position supports individual skill development, coordinates the program's player development plan, and serves as the primary liaison between the basketball program and the campus units that support student-athlete success — academic support, athletic training, strength and conditioning, compliance, and student affairs. The position also supports recruiting, scouting, and game preparation as assigned by the Head Coach, and is expected to model and reinforce the standards of the program and the Department in every interaction with student-athletes.
- Primary Responsibilities
- Coaching and Skill Development
- Serve as an on-court assistant coach for practices, individual workouts, and competition, with responsibility for assigned position groups and skill areas.
- Design and lead the program's individual player development plan — documented skill goals, workout progressions, and measurable benchmarks for each student-athlete, reviewed with the Head Coach throughout the year.
- Coordinate film study for individuals and position groups; prepare development clips and track progress against goals.
- Assist with practice planning, scouting reports, opponent preparation, and in-game responsibilities as assigned by the Head Coach.
- Collaborate with strength and conditioning and athletic training staff on individualized physical development and return-to-play progressions.
- Player Development and Student-Athlete Welfare
- Serve as the primary point of contact for the personal, academic, and professional development of student-athletes in the program.
- Monitor academic progress in coordination with Athletics Academic Support: class attendance, study hall, tutoring, progress-toward-degree, and APR implications; escalate concerns to the Head Coach promptly.
- Coordinate life skills, leadership, financial literacy, mental health awareness, and career readiness programming for the team, in partnership with campus resources.
- Support student-athletes through the transfer portal, NIL, and revenue-share environment by directing questions to Compliance and ensuring all activity is disclosed and recorded through the appropriate channels.
- Coordinate community service, alumni engagement, and team culture initiatives that reinforce the identity and standards of the program.
- Maintain regular individual meetings with student-athletes and document concerns, interventions, and follow-up.
- Recruiting
- Identify, evaluate, and recruit prospective student-athletes consistent with the program's needs and the University's admissions standards, including high school, junior college, international, and transfer portal prospects.
- Coordinate official and unofficial visits, maintain recruiting databases and communication logs, and ensure every recruiting contact complies with NCAA, conference, and institutional rules.
- Build relationships with high school, prep, grassroots, and junior college coaches within assigned recruiting territories.
- Compliance and Administration
- Maintain full knowledge of and strict adherence to NCAA, MEAC, and University rules and regulations; report any known or suspected violation to the Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance immediately.
- Complete all required compliance education, certifications (including the NCAA coaches certification exam, CPR/AED, and hazing prevention training), and documentation on time.
- Assist with program administration as assigned: travel, equipment, camps and clinics, budget tracking, and departmental reporting.
- Represent the program and the Department at University, alumni, donor, and community events as requested.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Coach or the Director of Athletics.
- Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
- A minimum of one (1) year of experience with an NCAA Division I athletics program as an intern, graduate assistant, or full-time employee.
- Working knowledge of the game of basketball and the ability to teach fundamental skills in individual and small-group settings.
- Basic knowledge of NCAA rules and a demonstrated commitment to compliance.
- Demonstrated commitment to the academic success and personal development of student-athletes.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Current CPR/AED certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
- Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree, or current enrollment in a graduate program, in Sport Management, Education, Counseling, or a related field.
- Collegiate playing experience, or coaching experience at the collegiate, prep, or high school level.
- Experience with player development, academic support, or student-athlete welfare responsibilities.
- Familiarity with video and analytics platforms (Synergy, Hudl, Sportscode, or equivalent) and recruiting software.
- Experience at an HBCU or with a diverse student-athlete population.
